Do you ever watch animal programs on TV?  There's one in particular I watch on Sunday mornings. I always learn so many things but this last week was different. The animals made such a connection with how we market.

The show was focused around Pets Ahoy! at SeaWorld in Orlando, FL. It is a hilarious show with a menagerie of animals all working (playing) together.  While listening to the producer talk about the program and animals, you could tell there was a lot of hard work that went into getting the show where it is today and continuing to keep it fresh.  By the way, that's definitely something important in our marketing— Keeping it Fresh!

As I continued to watch in amazement my mind went to the statement, "The trainers sure are smart to be able to teach all of their animals those amazing tricks."  I continued to watch and wonder how they could choose such intelligent animals.   Well, when I heard the answer did I ever feel silly.  I had reverted back to my old way of thinking like I had when I first started to market my business.  You know, looking at the marketing tools that are available and trying to fit ourselves into pre-structured molds.

The trainers obviously had a high level of training skill and a way with animals, but they were smarter than I had given them credit for.  They didn't teach the animals the tricks first; they spent a lot of time with each animal before ever putting them into the show.  Do you know what they did?  They brought them to the producers' private grounds and had them play around a replica of the actual set at SeaWorld. During that time the trainers WATCHED to see what the animals liked the most and where they shined with their skills.

Here is the key to anything, especially our marketing. The trainers built upon what the animal enjoyed most and what they did best.  They enhanced the natural playful nature and strengths that were within the animal.  DUH!

There are lots of things out there for you to enhance your marketing, to get you focused and to have fun doing what you do best.  It's just a matter of finding what works for YOU isn't it?  I really get it because I almost quit what I loved because I let marketing get in my way.  It wasn't until I discovered The Secret to Finding Your Inner Marketer did I excel in my marketing and business. It wasn't until I paid attention to what I liked and my natural strengths did I begin to have fun with my marketing.    One HUGE discovery I made along the way.  I really enjoy creating marketing tools, services and storybooks that will benefit my clients in their marketing. As a business coach, I have noticed that people who are very accomplished have a healthy relationship with failure. They embrace it, watch for it, learn from their mistakes and move on. Sometimes they even publicize their failures, modeling the kind of leadership they want to see in their employees. They seem to know that who they are is not their results.

Most of us only see these high powered, accomplished individuals when they are in the public and enjoying some success. We do not see the every day struggles, disappointments and failures. On the phone weekly with my clients, I have a privileged point of view. I hear the hesitation, the pain, the disappointment as well as the wins, successes and accomplishments.

Accomplished people seem to understand some simple truths, that they are not their mistakes and they are not their behaviors. Both of those are changeable. They seem to understand that who we are as human beings is constant. They are people who can fall down, smile, pick themselves up and keep going. They also know in their heart that when they fail at something, they are not a failure. When they make a mistake, they are not a mistake. When they do something wrong, they are not wrong.

I have also noticed that successful people seem less unlikely to avoid their feelings such as rejection, suffering, self-doubt, fear, depression and dissatisfaction. One of my clients Joe would say, "It's just part of the ride. It is normal to have fear sometimes, to feel lost sometimes, and to be disappointed. I wouldn't trade any of this for a dull cubicle and a steady paycheck". Confident people understand that mastery is a succession of failures, not wins. They understand that you have to be bad at something and keep going to master it. Failure and success are events. Whatever emotion or circumstance has been stopping you; I encourage you to go for it.

It is important to note that we can learn new skills and attributes to help us in our business. Entrepreneurship is no longer something someone is just "born to do" instead it is something we learn. Through practice and patience, we have the ability to change what is not working and enhance what is working so that we can successfully grow our business.

Below are 7 ways to stay motivated for the long haul:

Make/Renew your Commitment – Being committed to one's business venture is essential to staying motivated for the long haul. When we make a commitment to ourselves and our business, we are able to move beyond fears, doubts and insecurities that in the past may have held us back. I know this to be true because I experienced it. I didn't make a commitment to my business until I was in business for almost three years. I would fluctuate in my commitment depending upon the circumstances. When things were going good, I was committed, when they weren't, I thought about giving up. It wasn't until I made a written and verbal commitment to myself that I was going to give this business my all, no matter what, that I began to reap the benefits of being an entrepreneur. What I learned is that when we are most challenged is when we need to be committed the most.

Be Agile/Flexible – Combined with being committed is being agile and flexible. Bill Rancic, winner of The Apprentice reality-tv series was recently a guest on my radio show, The Entrepreneur Hour. He said, "having a business plan is important but being flexible with the plan is more important." Bill completely revamped his marketing strategy for his cigarsaroundtheworld.com business when his original business strategy wasn't working. He shared about how we need to leave our egos at the door and just do what needs to be done.

Develop a support network – A support network includes friends, colleagues and family who celebrate our successes and help us through our challenging times. While it is easy to call a support person to celebrate a success, it can be difficult to call and ask for help or express a difficulty. It's at the moment when we reach out and share our challenges, or ask for help that we begin to experience relief from the problem or challenge, see solutions and recognize the value of the people who support us. The support we receive is as strong as our ability to share the good times and bad.

Stay Balanced – When we are balanced within ourselves by getting enough rest, having healthy eating habits and taking take our spiritual needs, we are better able to cope with challenges. If you find yourself becoming irritable, impatient or the like, check first within your being – mind, body and spirit to see is you are in balance. We are always better able to cope and stay motivated when we take care of our human needs.

Be Realistic –Being realistic means that we know and expect ups and downs while growing and operating our business. These ups and downs may include anything from success to disaster. Our opportunity in being realistic is to know and believe that we have the skills within us to deal with any situation, regardless of the circumstances.

Choose a positive attitude – Having a positive attitude is a choice we can make at any moment of any day. We might be dealing with a difficult situation and while our natural tendency is to feel negative, we can choose to be positive. A positive outlook and attitude is a necessity in staying motivated for the long haul.

Stay Present – When we stay present to our business and to ourselves, we stay out of fear and worry. Staying present means that we "stay in the day" in our minds. We do this by not projecting our fears into the future or worrying about something that may or may not happen. Just like worry is a habit, we can develop the habit of staying present and being free from worry. Sometimes it helps to remind ourselves that all is okay for today.

One thing potential entrepreneurs continuously ask me is what should I be doing to get started? Should I be researching business ideas? Should I be writing a business plan? Where can I go to get inspiration on a business?

Where I would start is by asking yourself three questions. Now, If I were to ask you these three questions in person, I would ONLY share them with you if you promised to take action. Because if there was any ONE thing that I see lacking with most people who think they want to become wealthy and those who know that they are going to be and that is ACTION.

Here are the three questions you MUST ask yourself in order to make independence your own reality.

1. Are you serious about REALLY living your dream?

2. Are you on the right track to get where you want to be?

3. What can you do today get yourself closer to your dream?

That's it? You mean that's all you're going to give me Benny? C'mon - there has got to be some super-secret recipe that you can tell me that will start me on my way, some ONE thing that will lead me on my path to millions?

One thing that I've also learned is that my path is completely different than anybody else's. I tried to do things exactly as others before had done, and it just doesn't work. Now, there are some similar things that have been done before and will surely work. But what you want and what somebody else wants are two completely different things. That is why you won't hear me telling you how to do things.

I learned some time ago that this thing called your "Why" is what gets you going NOT the "How". There are a ton of books by these so-called gurus that will tell you how to trade stocks, or show you how they made millions by doing an infomercial. I love learning how they did it, but it might not necessarily be for me.

Alright, I hear you out there. Please show me something! Do you really want to make a million dollars or more? Do you want to know a business that will, if you are serious, take time to educate yourself and make smart business moves, you can become successful? Okay, it's Real Estate. It is time-tested and proven and I have several friends who are worth millions because of real estate.

Tell me , what's your HONEST reaction? Was it something like "No kidding, I'm doing that already." , "Oh, I could never fix toilets at 2:00 AM", "Should I flip houses, buy and rent?" or was is "Real Estate - nah too hard." The truth is real estate has created thousands of millonaires especially over the last 30 years, and personally, I've dipped my toe in it, but it doesn't excite me. So for many people who are interested in real estate as their passion - this works! For me, I'll probably buy some more real estate, because I know how to, but it won't be my primary focus. How about you?

Now go back to the three questions above, it is so easy to glance over the questions, but here's how you do it. Read question number one. "Are you serious about REALLY living your dream?" What is your life like today? Comfortable? Easy? Predictable? For many, the corporate culture creates an environment of "Just below acceptable". You do a job that isn't too hard. You make enough to enjoy life. You have a house, a car or two, take a vacation or two a year and that works. After all, everybody else is in the same boat right? So if you ask the question, are you serious? Many people will just say - NO. Because their lives are fine right now. Because of that fact, you can't move forward - you're not ready to go on. So while question number one may seem simplistic, it is the hardest question for MOST people to HONESTLY answer yes to.

Three simple questions. Three honest answers. That's all it takes to get you started.
